Description

“A Narrative of a Revolutionary Soldier” is a true account in the military life of Joseph Plumb Martin. The novel portrays the military life of Martin while serving the Continental Army in the American Revolution War.

Contrary to most other military accounts of the time, this is not the work of a general, politician or noble. It is the life exactly as a grunt experienced it in the army. Martin was a private throughout most of his military life, so he perfectly portrays the hardships of the simple and uneducated.

Born in 1760, Martin was just 15 when he wanted to join the Continental Army to fight for the revolution effort. His family strongly opposed the idea, but he was granted permission to enroll after threatening to become a privateer in the Navy. He joined the Connecticut State Troops one year later, and he was already a veteran in many battles before he turned 18.

His regiment, the 17th Continental Regiment, took part in notable events throughout the war, such as the battle of Monmouth, the siege of Fort Mifflin and the Battle of Brooklyn.

It is thought that Martin had a journal throughout his military career where he kept notes regarding life and activities in the regiment. He probably rewrote them later on with a great amount of detail only to publish it in 1830 under anonymity. His memoires were rediscovered in 1950, and since then they have become an immensely valuable war account for historians and military experts account. While a bit dramatized, his military campaigns are extremely accurate, especially given that the events portrayed in the novel would have been real actions in which his regiment participated.

“A Narrative of a Revolutionary Soldier” is a simple man’s true and sincere account of war and hardships in the army – and a lesson to anyone regarding the war effort and the sometimes unbearable ordeals.
