Description
Meredith Nicholson’s approach to writing this novel was considered by many critics to be quite prolific and daring, the story being filled with many improbabilities that the reader, however, would likely overlook on the background of a plot that revolves around the new world overcoming the old. The story is written much like a conversational novel in which characters tend to interact with each other more than usual, and they are pictured to have quite realistic personalities. The hero and heroine are depicted as regular, erring individuals who don’t always make the best, or most rational decisions. As a result, a complicated plot is spawned that is triggered by the death of the Austrian Archduke Karl. His son, Friedrick, is also presumed dead; however, some believe that John Armitage, a mysterious young man who begins his own solitary fight for power behind the Austrian throne, might be the lost heir.Possibly the most colorful and appealing part of the novel has to do with the introduction of American heiress Shirley Clairborne. She is a brave and likable character that usually ends up captivating everyone’s attention, including that of the ambitious young Armitage. But can Shirley trust him, and can they beat the ‘powers that be’ while supporting the new world they seek to build? Despite any criticism that may have been brought to the book’s apparent lack of deep philosophical exploration, The Port of Missing Men offers quite a few valuable mysteries, lessons and musings that the reader will find more than appealing, as well as entertaining. Also, the intriguing plot, detailed descriptions and complex characters will make for a highly engaging read, and likely lead you to keep on reading without being able to put the book down.
