Description

The Adventures of a Dog, and a Good Dog Too is an adventure story for kids written by Alfred Elwes, one of the most prominent writers of children’s stories in the Victorian era.

The tale is cute, adventurous and funny, narrated by a dog called Job in first person singular. The story takes place in a land where dogs live together, in their own houses, with their own households. The canine world that Job depicts is very similar to human society, with characters driven by human-like motivations. Job is a mixed breed who grew up under very bad circumstances, in poverty, and even though he performs various acts of heroism, he suffers from discrimination by the other dogs because of his lowly origins. He goes through various adventures – he must endure famine, even a flood, proving his worth and being accepted eventually. The moral in the book is simple: goodness, worth, honesty, courage and fidelity are always rewarded, even if one must suffer to gain recognition. The style of the book is fun and entertaining, mixing serious depictions of events with humorous elements.

The Adventures of a Dog is only out of the many animal stories written by Alfred Elwes. Most of his tales revolve around dogs, but he also wrote children’s stories about cats and bears. Elwes also wrote stories about young human protagonists who take part in adventures in Europe, most notably in Tuscany, Corsica, Sardinia, inspired mainly from his own journeys to Italy. Besides the author of stories for children, Elwes was also a philologist and an academic who translated Italian, Portuguese and French literature, wrote philological reference works, such as grammar books and dictionaries, and he was well-known in his time for his travel writing for adults.
