Description

Sir Henry Parkes, GCMG was a colonial Australian statesman and the most enduring non-consecutive Premier of the Colony of New South Wales, the modern state of New South Wales in the Commonwealth of Australia. He has been known as the “Father of Federation” because of his early advance for the union of the 6 territories of Australia, as a first analyst of British malefactor transportation and as a partisan for the broadening of the Australian continental rail network.

Henry addressed his renowned Tenterfield Oration which conveyed to his incitement of a forum and a Constitutional Convention, the first of several conferences that conveyed to the Australian federation. He was depicted by The Times as “the most commanding figure in Australian politics”. Alfred Deakin cited Henry as having imperfections although nevertheless being “a large-brained self-educated Titan whose natural field was found in Parliament”.

Henry’s fictional work contains 6 volumes of poetry such as Stolen Moments, Murmurs of the Stream, Studies in Rhyme, The Beauteous Terrorist and Other Poems, Fragmentary Thoughts, Sonnets and Other Verses. It has been the common habit to smile at Henry’s poetic accomplishments, and it is factual that his poetry might at times be nearly incredibly not that good. However, he had no actual assertions to be a poet he drafted a bit unsteady, honest poetry which has seldom been contained in Australian compendium.

These famous locations are named after him: Parkes, New South Wales, a regional town; Parkes Observatory, a radio telescope near Parkes, New South Wales; Parkes, Australian Capital Territory, a suburb of Canberra; Parkes Way, an arterial road in Canberra; the Division of Parkes (1901-69), an abolished Sydney electorate in the Australian House of Representatives; the Division of Parkes, a current regional electorate in the House of Representatives; plus more.
