The story is focused on the Ware family, who, after their father died, and their mother’s sickness, moved from Kentucky to Arizona. Joyce, one of the characters in The Little Colonel, took the responsibility to support her own family. She experiences hardships in her family’s present situation, and she feels sad and fears that her wishes and aspirations will never be sought. When she knew a story at Lee’s Ranch who tells her the “Legend of Camelback Mountain”, and the “Lessons of the Bees”, she started to wish and hope again.

When she read a letter to Lloyd who is referred as the Little Colonel, she went to the Ware’s at their home and stayed there for a month. She meets a good looking and admirable Phil Tremont whom she adores so much, and thinks that he might be the one for her. But Phil has his own concerns and preoccupied on how to learn the “Legend of Alaka and the Lost Turquoises”.

Little Mary Ware, another important character in the story, loves to talk, funny and very amusing. She plays an important role in the later stories.

Annie Fellows Johnston, born in Indiana, was an American author of children’s books who wrote the famous series, The Little Colonel, which was the ground work of the Shirley Temple movie, The Little Colonel.
