Description

Written by two authors and set in the post-war, prohibition era, In the Sweet Dry and Dry is a funny, dystopian novel about a world where everything natural is forbidden for the simple reason that anything natural can be fermented.

The book satirizes the attempt to stop humans from consuming alcohol. As any satire, this novel also uses the method of taking things too far, so the plot is full of improbable, often absurd story elements, some of them so unthinkable that they will make the reader laugh out loud. The characters take sides – some of them are prohibitionists, trying to ban all fruits and vegetables, while the others are against prohibition, trying to get intoxicated with pulverized alcohol. The ending of the book is just as funny as the rest of it, so readers won’t be disappointed – it they had laughing-out-loud moments while they were reading the book, there is no reason to turn sad and sour at the end and the authors who sign this book certainly knew how to write captivating endings. The book is eventful, but relatively short, making a quick read for an evening when you need some cheering up.

In the Sweet Dry and Dry is one of the lesser known novels for either of its writers. Christopher Morley was a poet, a novelist, a journalist and an essayist best known for his novel entitled Kitty Foyle that was such a success among readers that it was transformed into a movie that won several Academy Awards and later on into a radio serial and a television series as well. Bart Haley was also among the well-known intellectual figures of his time, a novelist, journalist and poet most known for his writing produced in collaboration with others such as Samantha versus Josiah: Discussions of the Natural and Supernatural that he published together with Marietta Holley.
