Description

The story of Frey and his Wife is a European epic, yet transcribed in a chronicle form by a 20th Century British fictionist. It is about the ventures of Gunnar, a Norwegian mistakenly held liable of manslaughter who escapes beyond the high peaks to the heathen woods of Sweden. There he runs into ‘Frey’ a Norse demigod, and a juvenile colleen who became his bride. Enmity unfolds amid Frey and Gunnar through the civic ceremony of ethnological offering which heads to an impressive result. The story has plotlines of spirituality, worship and affection, taking place during the period when Christian religion was beginning to relegate atheism in Scandinavia.

Maurice Henry Hewlett was a British classical prose writer, poet and essayist. He came from Weybridge, the first son of Henry Gay Hewlett, of Shaw Hall, Addington, Kent. He studied at the London International College, Spring Grove, Isleworth, and was admitted to the legal system in 1891. He quitted being a lawyer after the popularity of Forest Lovers. Between 1896 and 1901, he became Keeper of Lands, Revenues, Records and Enrolments, an administrative position as counselor on issues of primeval law.

Maurice wedded Hilda Beatrice Herbert in St Peter’s Church, Vauxhall, where her dad was the officiating minister. They had 2 little angels, Pia and Francis, though they got separated, notably because of Hilda’s profound ambition of becoming a pilot. Hilda afterwards came to be the prime lady in Great Britain to obtain an aviation license.

He stayed in Broad Chalke, Wiltshire. His colleagues involved Evelyn Underhill, and Ezra Pound, whom he got to know at the Poets’ Club in London. He was also a colleague of J. M. Barrie, who tagged one of the buccaneer in Peter Pan “Cecco” after the son of Maurice.

Maurice was satirized by Max Beerbohm in A Christmas Garland in an episode entitled “Fond Hearts Askew”.
