Henry Rider Haggard, mostly called as H. Rider Haggard or Rider Haggard, was born at Bradenham, Norfolk, the eighth of his ten siblings. After flunking his army entrance exam, he was sent to a private crammer in London to practice for the entrance exam for the British Foreign Office, for which he did not attend. In his two years in London he connected with people attentive in the field of psychical phenomena.
