Rider was firstly sent to Garsington Rectory in Oxfordshire to do schoolwork under Reverend H. J. Graham, but not like his older brothers who completed their studies from different private schools, he enrolled at Ipswich Grammar School. This was because of his father, who possibly considered him as someone they could not anymore manage to pay for his costly private education. After flunking his army entrance exam, he was sent to a private crammer in London to practice for the entrance exam for the British Foreign Office, for which he did not attend. In his two years in London he connected with people attentive in the field of psychical phenomena.
