Description

Samuel Hopkins Adams was best known as an investigative journalist and it is probably his talent and the stamina that he used for turning every stone when he was on a story that makes his novels so intriguing. The Secret of Lonesome Cove, published in 1912, was Adams’ third novel. It first came out in the form of series and under the title The Mystery, being given its final title when the series were compiled into a book version.

The mystery to be resolved involves the dead body of a woman washed ashore handcuffed to a raft. The identity of the corpse and the circumstances of her death are wrapped in mystery, but there are other enigmatic, unaccountable events as well, such as the strange behavior of a family mourning the death of their eccentric son. What the reader learns very early on during the investigation is that nothing is what it seems, so the investigation is full of unexpected twists and turns that give new impetus to the detectives.

Everything is revealed eventually, and the resolution of the mystery is just as surprising as the process of coming up with the resolution, making Adams’ novel an excellent and entertaining read. The novel is not all crime and mystery – it has a nice romantic sub-plot as well, making an excellent read not only for those looking for a quick-paced mystery, but also for those more romantic at heart.

Written at the beginning of the 20th century, The Secret of Lonesome Cove is not only an eventful story, but also a novel written in excellent, brisk style, elegant prose that captivates with its richness. There isn’t a predictable turn in the entire novel, so if you are looking for a great story for cold winter nights or for summer relaxation, this book is a great choice.
