Description

Conan the Cimmerian, along with a pirate woman named Valeria and a strange enclosed city inhabited by unusual people mark the making of one of Robert E. Howard’s most successful fantasy tales, which incidentally is also the third and last of his Conan novels. Howard wrote numerous stories, ranging from his well-known Conan novels, to a variety of other genres, including horror and western.

As Howard’s most famous character, Conan starts this story out somewhat less dynamically, but the plot soon picks up. Together with his companion, the beautiful pirate and adventuress Valeria – a member of the Red Brotherhood – the two engage in an unwilling adventure, as they escape from a deadly monster through a jungle. The aftermath is even more curious, as the two arrive at an unusual stronghold, where the action really starts to pick up.

This book is actually considered a novella, as it is even shorter than Howard’s other Conan stories, albeit not without the same fiery action and characteristic atmosphere that has captivated generations of readers throughout the past century. From dragons, sorcery and slaves, to subtle and not-so-subtle hints regarding love affairs, as well as a hefty dose of fighting, Red Nails offers just about everything one can possibly expect when opening a book that has Robert E. Howard’s name on the cover. Readers will essentially find themselves immersed into Conan’s world completely, without hope of escape, but through the skills and victories of the barbarian.

After reading this story, you will find it even more clear why Howard is considered a true master of the sword & sorcery fantasy subgenre that became extremely popular during the late 1920s and early 30s, particularly due to his own contributions. Red Nails remains to this day an action-packed, magical tale even more exciting than most modern fantasy novels, as well as a must-read for all those who consider themselves fans of Robert E. Howard’s works.
