The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was written specifically to spook its readers; the novel spooked a lot of readers after its successful publication. This was the story that guaranteed Stevenson’s fame and success as a writer.
The novel starts out with a lawyer, Mr. Utterson, listening to his friend describe a bizarre event involving the assault of a girl by a sinister man named Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde paid off the family of the girl he assaulted so charges would not be pressed. Later, Utterson realizes that his good friend, Dr. Jekyll, has written a will that entrusts all of his money and estate to a Mr. Hyde. Curious about the relationship between the two, Utterson investigates. He seeks information from his and Jekyll’s mutual friend, Dr. Lanyon, who admits that he and Jekyll are estranged due to a disagreement regarding Jekyll’s bizarre scientific experiments. Utterson visits Jekyll’s home and has a runin with the hideously deformed Mr. Hyde. As time passes, it becomes obvious to Utterson that Hyde is a dangerous man. But what is his relationship to his friend, Dr. Jekyll? Further probing results in Utterson’s realization of the ugly, horrifying truth about Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
An examination of the dual nature of mankind, Stevenson’s terrifying tale investigates man’s good nature and his dark side. The novel has been adapted into several different films. The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde remains one of the great gothic tales of the Victorian age.
