Description

The Diary of a Nobody was written by the brothers George and Weedon Grossmith is a detailed presentation of the events occurring in the life of a small clerk working for a financial institution, throughout a period of 15 months.

Charles Pooter, the protagonist, explains to the readers the reasons that determined him to write a diary, saying that one does not necessarily have to be a “somebody” to live a life full of interesting experiences, and that the events lived by a “nobody” like himself meet all the requirements for making the great public curious about what happens next, having comic and tragic accents at the same time.

After introducing himself, the main character presents the other members of his family, his wife Caroline, better known as Carrie, and his son William, who, at the beginning of the novel, works as a clerk for a bank in Oldham. The Pooters’ close friend circle is formed of the Jameses, who live in Sutton, Gowing, their neighbor, and Cummings, who is passionate of cycling.

Following his dismissal from the bank, the son of the protagonist moves back in with his parents, being the main cause of the events happening shortly after, in a quite rapid succession.

First, after gaining 200 pounds as a result of stock market speculation, he determines his father, Cummings and Gowing, to invest a large sum of money in the same company. However, the stock market crashes and the three men lose the amount they invested.

Then, not only that William, now known by his middle name, Lupin, is left by his fiancee, but he is also fired from the job he had at the company where his father works, for convincing an important client to leave the firm.

However, not everything in Pooter’s life is disaster and chaos, as things take an unexpected turn for the better…
