Francisco Pizarro (1471 – 1541) was born poor, the illegitimate son of a Spanish soldier. He worked for a short period of time as a swineherd, he offered to join an excursion to the outpost of Darien in Panama. He ascended through the ranks to become the deputy of the governor. When he heard about the speculations of a wealthy country of gold to the south, he was allowed by the king of Spain to guide a trek to discover and try to dominate the Peruvian kingdom. This life history explains how, with an army of only 168 soldiers, Francisco Pizarro was able to subdue the whole territory.

Frederick Albion Ober was a naturalist and author. He was born in Beverly, Massachusetts. He attended a common school education. At an early age, he showed a keenness for natural history as he gathered almost all the birds of New England and observed their behaviors. As a grownup man, he worked as a shoemaker. Then, he went to Massachusetts Agricultural College but because of financial struggles, he left college soon after. He had a career in a drugstore and worked again as a shoemaker.

In his literary profession for 30 years, he authored over 40 books, many are of travel books, but also books about birds, and biographies about Amerigo Vespucci, Hernán Cortés, and Israel Putnam.
