Description

Known as one of the most prolific and highly respected English authors of the Victorian era, Antony Trollope has written numerous novels on varied themes regarding politics, the social life and establishment of the time, gender issues and many other significant matters. Trollope’s remarkable humor can be seen in its complete form in this exciting novel about the struggles and difficulties created by dishonest businesses and advertising practices during the 19th century.

The Struggles of Brown, Jones and Robinson is a satire written about a clothing business that is doomed to failure from the very start due to its owner’s lack of initiative. The elderly Brown is far too timid to be a genuine businessman, while his son-in-law, Jones, suffers from an even more debilitating “affliction” – he constantly steals money from the till. Finally, the young and ambitious Robinson, the junior partner tasked with finding advertising slogans and materials, believes firmly in the fact that advertising alone can drive the entire business. Sadly, this leads to some startling developments.

Trollope also introduces a couple of curious characters who make up the bread and butter of the entire story: Brown’s two daughters. Neat, calculated and seemingly emotionless, they constantly spend their time trying to get more money out of the old man, or playing off to potential suitors.

Despite the satirical setting and Trollope’s seeming ridicule of small businesses and those who run it, the story has a very grave and powerful message to convey that is still valid for business owners today. Through his masterful narrative and subtle hints, Trollope shows us how the risks of running a business are extremely real, and how engaging in such a venture requires specific qualities and a great amount of hard work without which any business is destined to fail.
