Description

Jules Verne has probably had more of an influence on the genre of science-fiction than any other author in the history of literature. Stories like Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea or Journey to the Center of the Earth remain outstanding classics that have paved the way for early sci-fi authors to fully unleash their imagination on what is possible.

Five Days in a Balloon is yet another exceptional classic from Jules Verne, and it involves a story that introduces for the first time the various plot artifices and specific elements that would make up much of the essence in Verne’s novels later on.

As the readers of this fine work of literary art, we are invited to embark on an adventure accompanied by Dr. Samuel Ferguson and his trusted manservant, Richard “Dick” Kennedy. The two set out in an amazing journey across the African continent by balloon, using a unique mechanism that allows long trips to be taken without the need to throw the ballast overboard or gradually eliminate the gas in the balloon.

The science behind Dr. Ferguson’s balloon is quite intriguing in and of itself, especially since it uses hydrogen gas. The perilous voyage through the previously undiscovered regions of Africa sought to link the journeys undertaken by John Henning Speke and Sir Richard Burton, with Heinrich Barth’s endeavors through the dangerous Sahara desert. Attacks, narrow escapes and the need for constant perseverance dominate this exciting adventure novel, as readers are breathtakingly immersed into a strange, unknown world where one is never quite sure if the natives or the wild, untamed environment should be feared more.

If you enjoy sci-fi stories about adventure and exploration, you’ll undoubtedly fall in love with Verne’s Five Days in a Balloon, an early tale that has set the standard for the later development of the entire science-fiction genre.
