Is Mars Habitable?

Description

There were many interesting scientific theories at the beginning of the 20th century, and one of the most popular one that began to gain in popularity since 1895 was Percival Lowell’s elaborate concepts around the possibility of Mars being inhabited by intelligent beings. The “Canals on Mars” debate has been a lengthy one, being led by Lowell’s determination to thoroughly study the surface of Mars as an astronomer.

Is Mars Habitable? is a fascinating work of literary art and scientific deduction that places Lowell’s theories under the spotlight and explores its various facets. When humanity was yet to be capable of sending spaceships to Mars to examine the planet and determine whether or not it was inhabited – or even habitable, for that matter – Lowell’s research and the extensive and quite intelligent points made by Alfred Wallace in this book were the leading edge of thought, in terms of informing the public about the possibility of extraterrestrials living close to home.

As a professional scientist, Wallace is entitled to critique the work of Lowell – who was an amateur astronomer at the time of his finding. While the critique itself features many errors, as Wallace argues that water could not exist on Mars, and the canals could be caused by other geological phenomena, and are not necessarily canals per se, the book is nonetheless a very logical and rigorous critique, when considering the generally accepted scientific knowledge of the time.

Also, for fans of Victorian-style writing and language, this book will be even more fascinating and enjoyable. Wallace’s rich vocabulary and embellished sentences may not be what most casual modern readers are used to, but will definitely envelop the entire book in an aura of mystique.
