Description

Contra Gentes is the first volume of a two that was written by Athanasius of Alexandria before the uprising of the Arian controversy. It is particularly about the pagan beliefs and praising ending with a justification of the Christian belief of God and His creation, specifically the creation of the Spiritual Word. This first volume is the basis for working out the second volume of his book, that he had written and printed independently bearing the title De Incarnatione Verbi.

Saint Athanasius of Alexandria was also known as Athanasius the Great, Athanasius the Confessor or, principally in the Coptic Orthodox Church, Athanasius the Apostolic, was the twentieth bishop of Alexandria, as Athanasius I. The duration of his service as an episcopate lasted for 45 years, of which more than 17 years were exhausted in five dispersions by the order of the four distinct Roman emperors. Athanasius was a Christian theologian, a Church Father, the chief defender of Trinitarianism against Arianism, and a noteworthy Egyptian leader of the 4th century.

His dispute with Arius and Arianism and also with the following Roman emperors formed Athanasius’ career. When he was 27 years old, Athanasius commenced his lead against the Arians as a deacon and assistant to Bishop Alexander of Alexandria in the First Council of Nicaea. Roman emperor Constantine the Great had summoned the council to declare the Arian belief that the Son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, is of a different person from the Father. After the council, Athanasius followed his mentor as archbishop of Alexandria. In inclusion to the trouble with the Arians that included the dominant and compelling Arian churchmen led by Eusebius of Nicomedia, he had conflicts against the Emperors Constantine, Constantius II, Julian the Apostate and Valens. He was also called as the “Athanasius Contra Mundum” Latin phrase for Athanasius Against the World. After he died, Gregory of Nazianzus titled him as the “Pillar oftheChurch”.
