Saunders was issued on May, 1923; this book on the Buddhism of China by Professor Hodous will be the second to emerge; a third on the Buddhism of Japan, to be transcribed by Dr. R. C. Armstrong, was issued on 1924. All of these are required so that the aspiring learner of Buddhism as applied in those nations must be provided with real, imposing and amiable image of what he will encounter.

Lewis Hodous was a US Board Missionary to China, professor, Sinologist and Buddhologist. Lewis Hodous was born in Vesec, Bohemia and went to America with his parents. He completed his studies from Cleveland High School, from Adelbert College of Western Reserve University and Hartford Theological Seminary, and enrolled for a year at the University of Halle in Germany.

Lewis was proclaimed as a Congregational minister at Bethlehem Church in Cleveland, Ohio and afterwards became a missionary in China along with his wife Anna Jelinek. They traveled from San Francisco and reached Foochow, now known as Fuzhou. Lewis worked as a missionary under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) in Foochow, though which period he also brought about thorough researches on Buddhism and the Chinese traditional belief. He offered his dedicated service in Ponasang, providing instruction at the mission’s religious seminary, and became the head of Foochow Theological Seminary. Throughout the Hsinhai Revolution he joined the Chinese Red Cross. He became the head of the Foochow Union Theological School.
