Description

A synonym is a term or phraseology that defines precisely or almost as similar as the other term or phraseology in the similar language. Terms that are synonyms are told to be synonymous, and the phase of being a synonym is known as synonymy. For instance, the terms read, peruse, browse through, and go over are all synonyms of each other. Terms are usually synonymous in one specific sense: for instance, short and brief in the circumstance in a short while or in a short time are synonymous. Synonyms with the precise same meaning provide a seme or indicational sememe, wherein those with inaccurately similar definitions provide a wider denotational or connotational sememe and therefore overlay within a semantic area. The pervious are at times known as cognitive synonyms and the second, near-synonyms.

Most lexicographers allege that no synonyms have precisely the similar definition – in every vocabulary or social kinds of language – for etymology, orthography, phonic qualities, vague definitions, application or usage, and so on make them distinctive. Various terms that are synonymous in definition commonly diverge for a cause: canine is much more appropriate than dog; short and brief are only synonyms in one application and not in others. Synonyms are also a basis of euphemisms.

Metonymy can at times be a type of synonymy: the White House is applied as a synonym of the government in signifying to the U.S. executive branch under a particular president. Therefore, a metonym is a form of synonym, and the term metonym is a hyponym of the term synonym.

The study of synonymy, polysemy, hyponymy, and hypernymy is essential to taxonomy and ontology in the information-science drifts of those words. It has usages in pedagogy and machine education, for they depend on word-sense clarity.
