Description

While Lowell Massachusetts itself was founded in the 1820s, by 1840, the Lowell industrial complex was the largest in the United States. Aside from its success in the textile industry, the numerous cotton spindles in Lowell also contributed with the Lowell Offering – a monthly periodical containing poems, essays and prose provided by the local workers.

In the mid-1800s, Charles Knight was an influential publisher, author and editor, and was responsible for much of the success of the Lowell Mill Girls – a group of workers from the then successful manufacturing center for textiles, who contributed to the Lowell Offering between 1840 and 1845. Part of this selection was also Mind Amongst the Spindles, a selection of works from the Offering coming from girls and women as young as 15 years of age and as old as 35.

Ballads, essays and various works of fiction were all included in the miscellany. Titles such as The Fig Tree, Prejudice Against Labor, Joan of Arc and Life Among Farmers cover a great variety of themes and approaches to life, with each author offering something new and unique through their works.

Modern readers will be pleased to find that these stories neither require much knowledge about the times in which they were written, nor do they need special attention. Their simplicity and delightful, as well as oftentimes educational, atmosphere offers readers young and old something new to learn about and enjoy. Also, even though there is significant focus on themes regarding labor and the rights of women as workers, you’ll also spot plenty of insightful life lessons that can be adapted to any other area of our existence, even in the busy and dynamic world of the 21st century.

The world may have changed a great deal since Mind Amongst the Spindles was published, but almost anyone can identify with the timeless and insightful messages left behind by this diverse collection of precious literary works.
