Description

There are very few novelists who can rise to the same height as Agatha Christie when it comes to creating clear, imaginative mystery tales that can captivate the attention of people throughout the ages, for decades to come. Mary Roberts Rinehart is one of them, and her eloquent, complex novels such as The Door or The Circular Staircase, have gone on to inspire future authors and movie directors for years to come.

The Bat is one of Rinehart’s lesser known stories, yet it has an extremely pleasant, classical mystery feel to it. The story introduces us to a woman with quite a strong and decisive character, who also has enough material wealth to be quite independent, to say the least. As she rents a building whose owner is soon found dead, the plot begins revolving around the strange happenings inside the large house, and on an elusive character known as The Bat – a burglar who has frustrated the legal authorities for a while.

The novel has everything from an imaginative tale and highly descriptive elements that give you a perfect sense of what’s going on, to complex characters who seem to help the reader become completely immerse into the story line, as the plot progresses.

Rinehart is said to have used similar themes and inspirations that have led her to write her most famous novel, The Circular Staircase. Nevertheless, even though the style is similar and there are elements that fans of Rinehart can recognize, the story itself is quite unique and blended in with a few plot twists that will make the read all the more enjoyable.

Anyone interested in the works of Mary Roberts Rinehart should definitely consider reading The Bat – an engaging, well-designed story that will keep you at the edge of your seat all the way to the end.
