Description
Samuel R. Watkins or Samuel Rush Watkins, was an American author and satirist. He combatted during the Civil War and witnessed action in several immense conflicts. Now, he is most popular for his persistent dossier, Co. Aytch, which recalls his role as a soldier in the First Tennessee. At 21, Sam Watkins of Maury County, Tennessee, immediately joined the army when his state departed the Union. He became a member of Company H or Co. Aytch, as he termed it, 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment, and would clash from Shiloh to Nashville and was one of only 7 men who endured in the company when it was ceded to U.S. Major-General W. T. Sherman in North Carolina. Upon his death at 62, Sam was awarded posthumously with great military honors. With a “house full of young ‘rebels’ clustering about my elbows,” Sam started to document his activities in the First Tennessee Regiment. Co. Aytch is contemplated to be among the best memories ever crafted by a soldier of the matter. First issued as a series of newspaper column in The Columbia or Tennessee, Herald, his narratives were gathered and published in a form of a book. The elegant work captivates the feats of a private soldier, from the difficulties in the camp to terrorisms, the solidarity of a troop to casualties, patriotism of every state to the desolation of rout.Sam is habitually underlined and cited in Ken Burns’ 1990 report entitled The Civil War, and in the flick entitled Civil War: The Untold Story.Kennesaw Line, a song by Don Oja-Dunaway, recites a shattering monograph of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, from the standpoint of Sam Watkins, with some sections of the lines straight to rephrasing his depiction from his work, Company Aytch.
