Description

George Alfred Henty was an English novelist and war correspondent that wrote countless works of historical fiction. His novels were highly popular in the late 19th century, with works such as Under Drake’s Flag or For the Temple. One of his most popular novels is Wulf the Saxon – a story about a young man’s courage, dedication and loyalty coupled with historical insights into the England era prior to the Norman Invasion.

Hendy is known for his stories in which he has a young and mostly poor boy succeeding against all odds in various battles. These battles are mostly rooted in the history of Europe, and Henty makes a habit of inserting various historical elements and details that will make reading his books both entertaining and cultivating. Henty also provides an insight into the lives of the English nobility, thanes and peasants of that era while weaving the story with the adventures of the courageous Wulf.

In Wulf the Saxon, the author writes about a young thane who is devoted to Harold Godwinson who is to become Kind of England in a period right before the Norman conquest of the island. Wulf is constantly battling enemies, saving castles or survivors on shipwrecks or foiling assassination attempts that target important nobility members surrounding the king. Wulf distinguishes himself on every occasion through his courage and dedication, and he even participates in the notable historical battles at Stamford Bridge and Hastings.

Henty combines both fiction and adventure with historical details which accurately depict the stormy period that characterized England before it was invaded by the Normans. Readers both young and mature will enjoy this read, and many will be absorbed by the portrayal of England while also learning things they may not have known about that time in history.
