If you are interested in history, if you want to read an interesting account about the history of England and you don’t mind if it is spiced with a little tongue-in-cheek humor as well, Bill Nye’s Comic History of England will certainly be to your liking.

Based on the title of the book, the reader might expect a comic strip that discusses some topics related to the history of England. Well, the book is not that kind of a history book. What it is, though, is a very unique, detailed and accurate presentation of the major events in the history of England, all of them, even the saddest or the most tragic ones being presented from a funny perspective.

Nye’s book covers the history of England up to the beginning of the reign of Henry VIII, though the Guy Fawkes plot that took place in 1605, about half a century after the death of Henry VIII is also mentioned at some point, but without elaborating the subject. The author’s initial plan was to present a complete account, but he died in 1896, before he could finish the book.

However, even with important chapters missing, Comic History of England is a very interesting and entertaining book that will certainly make the reader laugh out loud at least a few times while going through the chapters of the book. The book is suitable not only for entertaining adult readers and history fans, but also to strike up interest towards history in the younger generations, showing them that history is not only a dry set of names, places and dates and it can be viewed from a funny and humorous angle as well. Given that the book presents only major events, it can also be used in class to inspire young readers to carry research of their own, filling in the gaps between the chapters of the book.
