Canada has had several courageous leaders, but none more courageous than Pierre Gaultier de La Vérendrye, who offered everything he had, even his own life, for the goodness and success of his nation. La Vérendrye was born on November 17, 1685 in an antiquated small village of Three Rivers, on the St Lawrence. His father was a district governor of which Three Rivers was the capital and his mother was Pierre Boucher’s daughter, an ex-governor of that district. During those times, when Canada was still colonized by France, both Three Rivers and Montreal had their respective governors, while the entire settlement was under the rule of the governor-general, who stayed in Quebec.

Lawrence Johnstone Burpee, FRSC was a Canadian librarian, historian and writer. He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He resided in Ottawa in his younger days, where he was employed as a personal secretary to three federal ministers of justice. He later worked as a librarian at the Ottawa Public Library, before having the position as a Canadian Secretary of the International Joint Commission, a designation he had till he died.

Lawrence assisted in the formation of the Canadian Historical Association and became its first president. He also became the president of the Royal Society of Canada.
