Description

Rudyard Kipling (1868 – 1936) began his adventures in writing short stories at an early age, during his time spent working at the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore, India. His talent was quickly noted, and it wasn’t long before he would receive due recognition for short story collections like his Plain Tales from the Hills, In Black and White or The Phantom ‘Rickshaw and Other Eerie Tales.

Compiled in 1909, Abaft the Funnel is one of Rudyard Kipling’s most controversial short story collections, due to the fact that Kipling wasn’t keen about their eventual reprinting. The stories themselves, however, stand tall and proud as some of his best works, encompassing many nautical stories, some of which will keep you at the edge of your seat, while others will give you a good laugh.

Kipling’s storytelling approach is definitely in a class of its own. Using genuine nautical terms and phrases that only the sailors of old would utilize in conversation, he set the stage masterfully to immerse the reader into an enchantingly vivid world of travel, adventure, unconventional situations and meaningful outcomes.

Titles such as A Smoke of Manila, The Red Lamp, A Fallen Idol or Letters on Leave will make you feel like you are genuinely setting sail aboard an old vessel, speaking to seadogs who know all about the dangers of leaving shore, and encountering some of the most unusual yet characters that were ever portrayed on paper.
