In this work, the famous Italian physician and pedagogue Maria Montessori presents her ideas regarding the best way of providing children with education appropriate for their age.

Even from the beginning, the author makes a clear distinction between different groups of age. Young children, of up to two and a half years, represent the first category. Children from two and a half to six years old form the second category. The third category includes children from six to twelve years of age.

According to Montessori, their senses are the primary “instruments” that the children in the first two age categories use for assimilating basic knowledge. This knowledge helps them develop their reasoning capacity, which becomes very useful once they advance in age and the subjects taught at school become increasingly difficult.

The physical development of the little ones is as important as building a solid intellect, the author of the study states. For this, she elaborates a complex guide on what foods should be included in the diet of the children in each category and what should be avoided.

More than that, Montessori also offers indications about the correct preparation of some meals, so that the nutrients they contain can be completely assimilated by the little ones’ organisms. Although some of her ideas regarding the right and wrong in children nutrition are outdated, others became milestones for modern pedagogy.

The author was among the first educators who made a distinction between the teaching methods applied to children with special needs and the methods used for educating children who do not have such issues.

Another premiere in the field was that her book included nutrition advice applicable to poor families as well, teaching parents with limited possibilities how to ensure healthy and balanced meals for their children with little money.
