Description

The book of the successful author and publishing company owner Melvin Powers is an interesting study on a subject that never ceases to stir people’s curiosity: self-induced hypnosis.

Written more than half a century ago, it has a great documentary value, mainly because one of its chapters presents the applications of self-hypnosis. For instance, since then, it was recommended as a method of treatment for those who want to get rid of bad habits such as drinking, overeating or smoking.

Also, the author suggests that hypnosis is a great way of making somebody consume foods or medicines they do not like because of a particular smell or taste. Some of the described applications were never scientifically confirmed, but others are widely used today for treating various psychological or even physical affections.

One of the most interesting chapters is the one that speaks about the dangers of hypnosis. According to Powers, one of the reasons people are reluctant to use it is that repressed feelings could be revealed in the hypnotic state. Also, when it comes to treating different affections, some patients consider that the procedure will only help them replace the “big bad” with a smaller one.

The book is more than an interesting reading, because the author backs up his statements with examples from experiments and studies of reputed specialists of his time. Also, at the end of the book, he also presents some instruments that, although very simple, are extremely useful when it comes to attaining self-hypnosis.

Melvin Powers was born in 1922, and, at the age of 16, he started to sell mail-order books. As his business grew increasingly successful, he created his own publishing house, The Wilshire Books Company. As an author, Powers is mainly known for the works presenting different methods of achieving success in mail orders and other sales fields.
