Description
One of the most literal English translations of the 20th century, the New American Standard Bible is one of the biggest assets of religion historians and good Christians alike. The Book of Psalms is a standalone version that was published in 1968. The main advantage of this version compared to older versions is the fact that it abides to higher standards. The translation is more literal and has fewer interpretations than previous translations. One standard states that all translations are meant to be true to the original writings, whether they are in Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic. All translations are also grammatically correct and free of the archaic English that was present in previous versions. Two other great advantages of the new version of the Book of Psalms is the fact that the writings are easily understandable, and they are also meant to give the Lord Jesus Christ the proper place and that no works are allowed to be personalized and to interpret his significance to Christianity. The Book of Psalms is commonly referred to as just the Psalms. It is the first book of the Ketuvim, which in direct translation means Writings. It is the 3rd section of the Hebrew Bible, and therefore it is contained in the Old Testament. The title, Psalms, is a translation from the Greek word psalmoi, which literally means “accompanied by music”. A freer translate would actually be the words accompanying the music, as it consists of various psalms which are 150 in this version, although they are more in the Eastern Christian Churches. For anyone wishing to study the Old Testament better, The Book of Psalms is a must read and a precursor to following the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ in the New Testament.
