Description

P.G. Wodehouse is one of the foremost comical writers in literary history. One of Wodehouse’s earlier novels, published in 1917, Uneasy Money is one of the works that garnered Wodehouse his first-rate reputation. Written during the first World War, the novel offered light wit and comedy to those living in an unstable time. In Uneasy Money, Wodehouse began to find his footing as the fantastically droll storyteller he would become.

The novel follows affable Lord Dawlish, a man of society without much money. His fiancé, the lovely actress Claire Fenwick, reminds him of this fact whenever she can. His luck turns around when he inherits a fortune from a man he hardly knew but once helped succeed in the game of golf. (Lord Dawlish is a great fan of golf, a sub-plot that leaves readers in stitches.) Lord Dawlish, a principled fellow, resolves to restore some of the fortune to its rightful heirs. Assisted by the beautiful and brainy Elizabeth Boyd, Lord Dawlish travels across the sea to America, where he encounters a succession of interesting and oddball characters. In classic Wodehouse tradition, hilarity ensues.

Poor Lord Dawlish learns just how difficult it can be to give away a fortune. The novel incorporates P.G. Wodehouse’s great love of theater, and Lord Dawlish’s travels reflect Wodehouse’s own living arrangements at that time; Wodehouse split his time between England and America.

Uneasy Money is certainly one of Wodehouse’s great, uproarious early novels: a classic romantic comedy.
