Description

Algeron Blackwood, along with his contemporary, H.P. Lovecraft were the predecessors of Stephen King when it came to creating unusual, daring and quite chilling horror tales that can still scare most readers out of their wits. Blackwood’s obscure and strange story, The Willows, is a ghostly and enigmatic tale about the possibility of hidden forces in the natural world, converging to challenge those brave (or foolish) enough to venture into the unknown and uncharted reaches of the natural world.

This beautiful horror story is set in Europe, where two men venture forth to travel through some of the wildest regions towards the East. Blackwood recreates the beautiful natural scenery of the Danube and the Carpathian mountains through his exquisite descriptions, and gradually introduces the reader to the supernatural as well. As the two travelers hear warnings against going through the ancient forests and untouched regions of the Carpathians, they attribute them to local folklore and superstition. However, what they encounter may shock and terrify even the bravest of souls…

The unique nature of the story itself is based on Blackwood’s ability to convey the spirit of the natural world itself through his writing, and create an enigmatic sense of dread simply because of the characters and the readers’ inability to explain the unknown, unexplainable events occurring as the plot unfolds. Unlike Lovecraft, who relies on demons and strange, scary worlds, Blackwood literally allows nature and reality to take their coarse, and reveal themselves as fearful due to the mind’s instinctual clinging to superstitions, or virtually any beliefs that could give it a hint to explaining what seemingly cannot be explained.
