George Oliver Onions was an English author of set of tales and more than 40 fictional books. He scribed in many types of genres, yet is possibly most commemorated for his spooky tales, remarkably the well-received volume, Widdershins and the immensely serialized novel The Beckoning Fair One. His wife, Berta Ruck, was also a writer.

First educated as a sought-after artist, he was a poster and book designer, and as an illustrator through the Boer War. He was influenced by the US author Gelett Burgess, George started drafting stories. The first versions of his books were issued with paper cover with vibrant illustrations drawn by George himself.

He had many volumes of eerie tales, of which the highly praised is Widdershins. It consists of the novel The Beckoning Fair One, greatly considered as among the finest in the category of ghost stories, particularly psychosomatic tremor. On its face, this is a typical tale of a spooky, old, abandoned house: a futile novelist resides in one of the rooms in a haunted house, in the belief that seclusion will aid his unproductive ingenuity. His kindliness and fancy are heightened by his remoteness, although his craft, his only pal and his rationality are all devastated throughout the course. The tale can be leafed through as detailing the slow possession of the hero by a mystic and possessive female goblin, or as a plausible delineation of a ridiculous plague concluding in catatonia and manslaughter, narrated from the queer context’s whimsical imagination. The short outline of the gradual fragmentation of the hero’s thoughts is startling in all aspects.
