James Lane Allen was a U.S. author and short fiction writer whose writing, such as his A Kentucky Cardinal, repeatedly portrayed the custom and parlances of his birth place Kentucky. His oeuvre is distinctive of the later part of the 19th century native color period, when authors wanted to captivate the language in their works of fiction. James was known as “Kentucky’s first important novelist.”

James Lane Allen was born near Lexington, Kentucky; his parents were Richard and Helen Jane Foster Allen. James was the youngest child in the family, had four sisters Lydia, May, Sally, and Annie, and two brothers, John and Henry. James resided at the Scarlet Gate estate in Lexington in the last years of 1800s up until he was 22 years old. James spent his younger days in Lexington throughout the Antebellum period, the American Civil War, and the Reconstruction periods. His youthful experience strongly inspired his composition. He expressed residing at Scarlet Gate in the introduction to A Kentucky Cardinal.
