Basil, or, Honesty and Industry by Charlotte Grace O’Brien is a great development novel in which a young man learns the value of things in life and he also strengthens his faith in God.

The novel is short, but very dense and very educative. The title character Basil is a young boy who lives in deep poverty with his family. He is faced with numerous challenges and hardships that instead of hindering his faith in God, strengthen his belief. He needs to work to provide for his family and after some searching he finds employment with a woodcutter, a kindhearted, helpful and spiritual man who likes Basil and acts as a mentor for the boy, teaching him about life and about Christian values and virtues. Basil understands that honesty and industry are the two most important qualities and through these two values he also learns the value of faith.

Charlotte Grace O’Brien was a prolific and recognized author of Irish origins known not only for her educational stories, but also for her work as a philanthropist and an activist in various causes including the protection of the rights of female emigrants. Her writings encompassed many different genres. She wrote novels such as Dominick’s Trials or the famous Light and Shade, which provided a faithful account of the Fenian rising based on details she found out from Fenian leaders.

She also wrote a drama entitled A Tale of Venice, as well as poems collected in a volume entitled Lyrics, and she contributed numerous articles to prestigious newspapers and magazines of her time, such as Irish Monthly or the Dublin University Review. Beside social problems, literature and politics, she also took interest in the collection of plants. She wrote about botanic topics as well, publishing a study about the flowering plants on the Isle of Wright.
