Description

American poet and dramatist Josephine Preston Peabody (1874 – 1922) started her literary career at the relatively young age of 23, and quickly became a notable figure of the late 19th century primarily through her 1909 drama, The Piper, which won her the Stratford-on-Avon award. Peabody wrote several poetry books as early as 1897, including Old Greek Folk Stories Told Anew, The Singing Leaves; a Book of Songs and Spells, and her 1915 book, entitled simply New Poems.

After Music is an example of Peabody’s subtle, inventive and intensely experienced poetry. The poem is a reflection of the author’s deep connection with music at a soul level, and can be considered one of Peabody’s single most “musical” poems.

It takes us through a strong emotional experience dominated by an intense sadness, a feeling of being lost and an incontrollable desire to follow the mysterious music that the speaker mentions. Peabody’s comparisons and many subtle lyrical artifices such as the metaphor of the music itself convey the presence of an existential atmosphere while creating an aura of mystique and irresistible longing.

The poem continues to resonate with readers in its timeless meaning and through the unique atmosphere it generates to soothe the heart and address the deep desire that many of us feel when urged to follow our own dreams. Reconciling the loss of a familiar place that served as a home, however, is the main theme of the poem as the speaker explores the many emotional undertones involved with this endeavor.

Josephine Peabody died on December 4, 1922, leaving behind an extensive legacy of poems and songs, many of which were republished in works such as An American Anthology, 1787-1900. After Music is among those poems, and it is also one of Peabody’s most inspiring and enjoyable works that still resounds in the minds of readers more than a century after it was written.
