Description

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel alone on horseback through unexplored countryside landscapes and unusual places most people at home might only dream of? This is precisely what Isabella L. Bird (1831 – 1904) was doing in a time when even strong men and large parties of travelers would hardly venture into some of the untamed regions she had explored.

Victorian English traveler, historian and author, Bird grew up in Tattenhall, Cheshire. Despite all the time she spent later on traveling through the most dangerous lands and horseback riding through difficult terrain, her early years in Britain seemed to be even more difficult as she found herself constantly falling ill. However, after her mother’s death in 1868, Bird embarked on several long journeys to avoid settling down with her sister, and she found she had an exceptional drive to explore and document new places.

Among the Tibetans contains a detailed historical account of Bird’s journey through Tibet as seen through the author’s own eyes. This journey was a part of the explorer’s later years, when she decided to become a missionary and set off for India at nearly 60 years of age. Despite her advancing age, Bird still traveled alone, and she never used a lady saddle, but rode her horse “frontforwards” like a man.

The book is exceptionally well-written, and features many beautiful descriptions of places throughout Kashmir, which is still considered to be home to some of the most stunning landscapes in the world today. The author speaks at length about the various customs and mannerisms, as well as other culturally and historically significant details of the area.
