Description

“Amelia” is a novel written by Henry Fielding, an English prose writer living in London in the 18th century. He was also the author of “Tom Jones” and, through his novels, he established the mechanisms of the modern novel.

“Amelia” does not follow the same formula as the typical 18th-century novels: the man who woos the woman until she becomes his after a little drama that always ends well. This novel is based on the issues of married life (infidelity, man’s intelligence vs. woman’s intelligence etc.). Fielding managed to include enough drama to create a good story and was great at using satire and inserting entertaining passages when they are needed.

The plot follows Amelia Harris, who comes from a rich family but, predictably, falls in love with William Booth, an army officer but a poor man. Amelia’s mother thinks Booth is just a fortune hunter and opposes their relationship. However, the two take their life in their hands and choose to live together, with little money. But Booth ends up getting into troubles: first, he gets arrested while trying to help a man in a street brawl. In prison, he meets an old acquaintance from his hometown, Miss Mathews, and the two become more than friends. When he gets out of the prison, Booth leaves London with his army unit, to fight in Gibraltar. He gets wounded and becomes very ill; Amelia comes to nurse her husband and fell sick too.

When the war is over, Booth returns to England but, considering that he is not needed in the Army anymore, he is jobless and financially desperate. He will end up gambling and returning to jail for not being able to pay his debts. The couple gets some unexpected help from a friend, Dr. Harrison; soon after that, they find out that Amelia’s mother died and her evil sister, Betty, took the entire heritance, stealing her Amelia’s part too. But will Amelia and William be able to prove it?
