Description
The Eye of Osiris, by R. Austin Freeman, is one of Freeman’s early Dr. Thorndyke mystery novels. The character of Dr. Thorndyke is a forensic investigator who acts as a detective in many of Freeman’s mystery novels. Thorndyke uses medical and biological evidence to track down and help convict criminals. The Thorndyke novels are often medical crime mysteries. In The Eye of Osiris, Dr, Thorndyke is drawn into the investigation of the disappearance of an English gentleman, an aspiring Egyptologist. Drawn into the case by friends of the missing, Thorndyke uses deductive reasoning to find out what has happened to Mr. John Bellingham. The novel, follows this incredibly sophisticated and intriguing investigator as he tracks a formidable and resourceful villain. Freeman’s novels are an not always an adventure in discovering who done it, but rather on discovering how it was done and why. The Eye of Osiris also includes its fair share of dark humor, a developing love story, and is a prime example of the “golden age” of mystery novels. R. Austin Freeman was the inventor of the inverted detective story; a story-telling technique that is incorporated into crime television and fiction even today. The crime is described at the beginning of the story, sometimes in lurid detail, often exposing the criminal’s identity. The rest of the story is devoted to the solving of the crime. Freeman influenced many mystery writers, including the likes of Raymond Chandler and Dorothy Sayers. Title: The Eye of Osiris Author: R.
