Spying in the First Great War Thanks to Miss Pim’s Camouflage
While Dorothy Tennant, or Lady Stanley, has been mainly known for her neoclassical paintings, she was also a prolific writer and she even illustrated some of her books. One of the ones which has drawn the most attention is Miss Pim’s Camouflage, an adventure that will give everyone the thrills while also getting to experience life during the Great War.
The protagonist of the story is the Englishwoman Miss Perdita Pim. This patriotic woman comes from a long line of distinguished officers and soldiers in wars, but with the Great War uncovering, she is unable to take part. The only thing she can do to help the war effort is to tend to her onion fields.
One day, when she spends too much time under the scorching sun, she discovers that she has become invisible. She embarks on a great journey that will take her behind the German enemy lines where she will spy on them and gain valuable information that will help her allies win the war.
In Miss Pim’s Camouflage, the main character plays the part of a super-agent that uses her invisibility to sneak behind officers, machine gunner men and get away with invaluable military intelligences. She is sometimes visible, which can put her into a load of trouble, and sometimes invisible, the occurrences switching between one another to increase the suspense of the novel.
The story is fast paced and it follows Miss Pim as she navigates through the battlefields of the First World War, witnessing atrocities and crimes and trying to help end the massacre. Readers will find themselves holding on to their seats to find if Miss Pim’s camouflage will fail right when it is needed the most and whether she will eventually succeed in helping her side to win this terrible conflict.
