Description
Mr. Trunnell, Mate of the Ship “Pirate” by Thornton Jenkins Hains is a quick-paced and well-written adventure story about a dangerous and difficult voyage on a clipper ship (a fast ship very common in the 19th century, featuring a special design of raked masts and concave-shaped bows).Narrated by the second mate on the ship, the story revolves around the deeds of Mr. Trunnel, the first mate, a strong man of great integrity the narrator very much looks up to. The story that starts as the account of journey soon becomes the story of an epic fight between good and evil, with Mr. Trunnel representing good and the former captain of the ship and the current captain who may not be a captain at all representing evil. Good prevails, of course – Mr. Trunnel manages to stop the mutiny that is about to break out and to discipline the crew, proving his worth to everyone aboard.Thornton Jenkins Hains was a true expert of life at sea. He published about a dozen of stories during his career as a writer, most of which appeared in Sea Stories, a pulp fiction magazine that enjoyed great popularity in the 1920’s. His more well-known work includes The White Ghost of Disaster and The Cruise of the Petrel, but what made the name of Hains widely known to the general public was not his activity as a writer, but his involvement in a highly publicized murder case in 1908. Hains informed his brother that his wife was unfaithful to him and the brother shot his wife’s lover, with Hains himself being present at the murder scene, with his pistol drawn and watching his brother commit the crime. Hains was first convicted of manslaughter in 1909, then got pardoned by the governor in 1911, but his literary career never recovered.
