Description

Pope Leo XIII was born as Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi Pecci to an Italian comital family, ruled from 20 February 1878 to his decease in 1903. He was the most aged pope – ruling up to 93 years old, and had the third lengthiest pontificate behind that of Pius IX his direct antecedent and John Paul II. He is the greatest present pontiff to date to get the hold of the pontifical name of “Leo” upon being voted to the pontificate.

He is known best for his theories, the advancement of social teachings with his popular papal encyclical Rerum Novarum and his efforts to describe the standpoint of the Catholic Church regarding the modern thinking. He composed a documented eleven encyclicals on the rosary acquiring the sobriquet the “Rosary Pope”. Pope Leo defined the rights of laborers to a fair income, safe working conditions, and the foundation of working unions, while confirming the rights of property and free venture, contrary to both Atheistic Marxism and laissez-faire capitalism. He inspired Roman Catholic Mariology and advocated both the rosary and the scapular.

This comprises thirty of his most renowned encyclicals and letters. They contain a large array of topics, such as, Christian marriage, socialism, communism, freemasonry, Anglican orders, and human freedom. Most of the encyclicals consisted in this volume are: Inscrutabili, Rerum Novarum, Quod Apostolici Muneris, Humanum Genus, Arcanum Divinae, Immortale Dei and all others.

Leo XIII toiled to enthuse understanding between the Church and the universe of today, although he chose a vigilant insight on liberation of thought, telling that it “is quite unlawful to demand, defend, or to grant unconditional freedom of thought, or speech, of writing or worship, as if these were so many rights given by nature to man”. Leo’s social teachings are grounded on the Catholic idea that God is the Creator of the universe and its Ruler.
